The Nuremberg Trial of German Major War Criminals opened amid great fanfare and rhetoric on 29 November 1945. More than ten months later, on 1 October 1946, of the twenty-two defendants, twelve were sentenced to death by hanging - Martin Bormann in absentia - three were sentenced to life imprisonment, four were sentenced to prison terms ranging from ten to twenty years, and three were acquitted. Goering committed suicide by swallowing a cyanide capsule shortly before he was due to be hanged.
