The Holocaust Resource Center of Buffalo’s Yom HaShoah 2016 Committee announces this year’s commemoration date as Sunday May 1, 2016 at 1:00 P.M. The theme of the community event will be “We Remember” and will be held at the Temple Beth Zion, 805 Delaware Avenue in Buffalo, NY.

The Commemoration will premiere a documentary created for YH 2016 entitled, “We Remember – Six Local Holocaust Survivors Speak.”  The film was created by Jim Gang and Rich Kellman. “The committee felt strongly that as long as we have Survivors living in our community we should hear their voices. Jim and Rich have been videotaping and creating classroom-friendly documentaries. They were thrilled to be part of this project, “said Rachel Kranitz McPhee, YH 2016 Chairperson.

This year’s event will have several other unique elements:

  • A 6th/7th grade program from 11:00 am – 1:00 p.m. at Temple Beth Zion.
  • Dr. Chana Kotzin, Jewish Buffalo Archives Project will introduce and launch a new exhibit at the Cofeld exhibit entitled, Saving a Legacy: Jewish Cultural Reconstruction in Buffalo, NY.
  • Three Jewish youth choirs will sing together.
  • Sarah Donatelli, granddaughter of Holocaust Survivor and HRCOB Board member Sophia Veffer, will perform a violin interlude.

Members of the Yom HaShaoh 2016 Committee include: Chair Rachel Kranitz McPhee, Marnie Benatovich Cerrato, Daniel Kester, Sharon Malek Jacobs, Matan Schwartz, Herman Stone, Sharon Meer, Marilyn Toth, Sophia Veffer and Pieter Weinrieb. It is staffed by HRCOB Executive Director, Mara Koven-Gelman.
